Farther Than the Eye Can See

(2003, US, 75mins) Director: Michael Brown A Serac Adventure Films/ Outside Television Production

Inspiring is an overworked word for this multi-award-winning movie, but really no other will do to describe the story of blind climber Erik Weihenmayer’s historic attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The visuals are as staggering as you’d expect from a film capturing the epic scenery of the world’s highest peak – and shot in high definition, they are superb - but it’s the intimate details of how Weihenmayer deals with the physical challenge that are most compelling, especially as he negotiates ladder bridges across crevasses and defies the naysayers who predicted he’d be a liability to himself and his team. ‘If I fail,’ he says, ‘People will say it’s because I’m blind. If I succeed, people will say I “overcame blindness.” But blindness isn’t always the issue.’ A riveting tale about a man who shatters your perceptions of blindness.
